"Day after day, the cubs struggle over the snow. They nurse and sleep often and ride piggyback when they are tired. At the edge of the sea ice, they are afraid of the grinding noises and strange smells, but the hungry mother urges them along."
On a freezing day in the arctic, two polar bear cubs are born. Deep inside the snow den, the mother snuggles her cubs to keep them warm.

In a few months it is mild enough to venture outside. The mother teaches her cubs how to use their claws so they don't slip in their frozen world. She leads them across the sea ice, the only place to hunt for seals, their primary food. All the bears need to fatten up to survive through the summer, when the ice is gone and food is scarce.

The book ends with an Arctic Ice Report about melting ice and a list of organizations that are working to help the environment.
